I am a missionary and our organization brings in several missionaries each year legally through all the proper immigration paperwork. One thing to remember is that the USA has very strict immigration policies towards Brazilians, therefore Brazil considers its right to mirror many of those very stringent requirements toward Americans desiring to come to live in Brazil. The first step is to go to your closest consulate in the USA, (Houston, Chicago, Miami, LA or Washington). Tell them what you want and they will give you the correct procedure. If you follow everything exactly you will get a work visa for Brazil, if you cut corners you will not. If you marry your girlfriend things will be a little easier but you will still need to follow a series of somewhat complex instructions. The first step is the consulate either way.

If you move don't give up your American status because if so you are screwed. My husband is Brazilian and wants me to move there with him for like 2 years, but I doubt I will do it. I find many of them men can't be trusted and are cheaters. I think if I go there we will likely divorce so might as well get it out the way before I waste a trip and divorce him now. Hope you have better luck, but I know many Brazilian people and Americans with Brazilians and none have had no good luck. Maybe just in my state.
