Have fun in Rio.
I lived there for awhile....
Dance til' ya drop. Most of RIOs clubs and bars play american and brasilian hiphop. In Copacabana the clube Mariuzinn is a good place to dance and forget about things. Mud bug is down the street it's more of a low key neighborhood gathering place. If you are in Copacabana there are sevral good outdoor restaurants. The better ones are along Av. Atlantica. Start at Posto 4 (Av. P. Isabel) all the way down to Posto 6 (Av. Rainha Elisabth).
The next street up from Av. Atlantica is N.S. Copacabana. There is a variety of resturants there. Several "Kilo" restaurants... buffets where you pay by the weight of what you placed on your plate.
If you want to see something that's pure Brasilian visit the Feira de SĂŁo CristĂłvĂŁo. Friday and Saturdays it's open basically all day and at night & theres alot of regional music played. Extremly crowded, but has restrooms.
There are little kiosks and restaurants inside. If you are staying at a hotel the concierge should know about the Feira de SĂŁo CristĂłvĂŁo. On the weekend visit the Hippy Faire in Ipanema. That's interesting.
If you want to really see where young cariocas go on friday and saturday nights go to the Arcos de Lapa... or just Lapa as everyone calls it. It's like a giant street party. Beware it's extremly crowded. Lots of booze and no place to "pee". Lot's of music and whatnot. Veryyy interesting indeed. Take a cab to and from there. Don't take the buses anywhere at night.

SAFTEY:
Remember always take a cab to and from any place at night. Don't walk for more than severals blocks alone at night. Try to stay with a group of people/friends if you're walking at night. Never get too drunk to walk back to your place whatsoever.

IF ALL THIS SOUNDS TO WILD AND CRAZY ... ALL THE 5 STAR HOTELS HAVE GREAT RESTURANTS.
THE BEST RESTAURANT IS PorcĂŁo... THE ONE IN Avenida Infante Dom Henrique s/n, Parque do Flamengo IS THE BEST ONE TO GO TO.

GO TO THIS WEBPAGE FOR ALL RESTAURANTS IN RIO:

Rio is GREAT!!! It's a beautiful city with great hotels, shopping-centres...and great food. The best restaurant EVER is "Porcao" which is placed in the borough "Ipanema" as well as in "Barra" (but the one in Ipanema is better since you have a gorgeous view over the beach). It's really delicious, but unfortunately it's a bit more expensive... !

(--> it was the best decision you could make to travel du Rio. you definitely WON'T regret it!)

San
I don`t know about night clubs, but I have a couple of restaurants to suggest:
PorcĂŁo - it's a BBQ place, with a huge buffet.
Garota de Ipanema - a restaurant where you can get pizza and traditional meals (meat, chicken) - that is the place where the song "Girl of Ipanema" was created. They have menus in English, so it might help.
Besides those, we went to some restaurants in Copacabana (waterfront) there are so many, you just have to pick one... hehehe
Have a fun trip.
=)

Brazil with your wife? Oh man, you're gonna regret that. Especially when you get to the beach. I'm sure your wife is very beautiful but what till you get a glimpse of what's down there. You may never go back home. First of all, Rio is somewhat dangerous. Really. If you're staying at a hotel they have nightclubs there. Venturing out is not recommended. The outer parts of Rio is pretty risky. Sao Paulo is very nice. It's more "city" like. Don't let me scare you - Rio isn't all that bad but it can be if you don't know where you're going. Enjoy and next time ... GO ALONE!
