It's not one city, but a lot of cities in Brazil. It's a tradicional party half religious, half folkloric. The tradicion of the "Festas Juninas" (junes's party) has been lost in the big cities of Brazil, but is very strong in Northeast, North, Central-East and interior of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.
There's a tipical dance, the "quadrilha", and tipical clothes too. The elebration of the saints is strong, but the pagan party is more beautiful. The saints celebrating in June are St. John, St. Peter and St. Antony.
Look some fotos of this amazing party of my country:

See, on the second photo, the standard with the names of the saints.

Festas "Juninas" (from June) celebrate st John, st. Peter, st. Anthony and probably some other saints as well.
Even though the name refers to JUNE it's spread thru June and July (since July is winter vacation).
It's originated in the north east of Brazil but now it happens all over the country.
It's not truly religious but it did become quite the tradition in Brazil and for city folk it's sort of a hillbilly party, not in a derrogatory way but in the costumes, music, food.
They dance an ensemble dance called "Quadrilha" and jump over fires...
I'd say internaly in Brazil is second only to Carnival in tradition.
LOTS of fireworks, for the desperation of my dogs.
Not sure about the sun and the state, like I told you, it's all over the country nowadays. |

You are probably referring to one of the two cities:
Campina Grande or Caruaru. |

It's probably in the Northeast as some other answers say... it may be Recife (capital of Pernambuco) or Maceió (capital of Alagoas) which hold quite famous Festas de Sao Joao (St. John's parties), but if you say about the sun I think that may be Joao Pessoa (capital of ParaÃba) which is the closest point to the African continent. Anyway I hope it helped but there are many cities in the Northeast. Brazil is a huge country... |

June is the month for "Festas Juninas" Literally June parties. These are folk parties initiated in the Northeast of Brazil and now occur throughout Brazil. Brazilians in general love parties. The city you were asking of and the most famous city for these June Parties is Caruaru in Pernambuco (although they occur throughout the country). The parties are in general a celebration of Northeastern culture with traditional music, food and drink. |
