I don't really know, as I 've never been to Rio (nor even Brazil)...Maybe the movie was a little bit exagerated, butI think that the police forces have no other alternative : they must be violent because there are monsters in front of them ( the drug-dealers who kill people like we kill flies!)
Drug and murder are crimes, and the citizens have the legitimate right to live in peace and security, that's why a elite force such as the BOPE is necessary in those places...
I even think there should be BOPE in Europe and USA too, everywhere... |

It is, because the violence is high as well.
But many ppl have this wrong impression of brazil, they think what they see on movies is what really happens over here.
we have certains areas that are violent, but the rest of the country is actually a great place to live. |

Unhappily yes.
If you saw the film Cidade de Deus you will understand the reason of so much violence, the violence is addressed the poor communities that are dominated by the drug traffic. I that live in a middle class neighborhood never saw the "Caveirão" "great skull" that is an attack car, but for the poor is constant visit.
