Is Brazil officially called in Portuguese ' United States of America?'?

I had heard this, and was wondering considering you are an American country as much as the US (South opposed to North), and that you are federated state wise in a same manner.

Amaya answer is right.

But many years ago, more than 30 years ago, Brazil's official name used to be Estados Unidos do Brasil, which translates into English as United States of Brazil. Now, it is República Federativa do Brasil, Brazilian Federative Republic

Brazil's official name is "Republica Federativa do Brasil" Which loosely translates as "Federal Republic of Brazil". That's because it's a republic and it's a fedaration as well, with 27 states (?) and a centralized power branch. Brazil is indeed part of the Americas, but Brazilians do not consider themselves Americans. They are South Americans and Brazilians. I don't think that being in the Americas is an important part of the Brazilian identity.

No. United States of America is an English term, not Portuguese.

Never heard such a foolish thing. Yes Brazil is technically a federation but a much more centralized one than the States. Besides, for modern Brasilians, being called "Portuguese something" might just not work. It is a very proud country.

Mexico's official name in Spanish, on the other hand, is "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" (Mexican United States, or United States of Mexico).

However, that has nothing to do with the American USA (in case there are some egocentric Americans reading this... Mexico does admire it's neighbor, but not to the extent to name the country after it. Just in case someone thinks that's the case.)
