Is Brazil really unsafe for Americans to travel?

My Brazilian friend was talking to me about how tourists from America that go to Brazil get ganged and beaten up, and he was like "If you ever come to Brazil make sure you don't wear things like fanny packs or 'I love New York' T-shirts."

Is this true???
Additional Details
isis000: ( I WOULDN'T wear something like that. LOL! I'm a very fashionable person so i would never be caught dead wearing those things.

(1) America is a continent where you find both, USA and Brazil:

(2) What a Brazilian tourist could think about the safety in USA hearing so bad news from here: terrorist attacks, snipers and killers. A Brazilians was victim of that mad asiatic guy who kill 13 in NY some weeks ago and many other gone to USA and came back dead (murdered), but you don't hear about this in your country. CNN and others show you only the bad thing that occurs in foreigner country. Mainly, the bad things who happen with "Americans";

(3) Yes. We have more robbers than we accept, but, we, Brazilians are the main victims. Not you, tourists. I hope you don't believe in that bullsh*t of "TURISTAS". Only a stupid moron would assume that as the reality of a nation.
Make sure to look and act like a Brazilian. Brazilians can look like person from any country. We have not a specific appearance because we are a nation of immigrants. Brazilians are descendants of not less than 25 nations from Europe and other 25 from the rest of the World, including USA. So, a tourist never will look weird to a Brazilian due to the color or face;

(4) See the testimony of this guy (Italian Stallion). He is from USA. Read what they wrote:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjEWl4vfJm3tgz8sqmCf8Wbty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090413093948AAWkP8r&show=7#profile-info-kIE9TxvWaa

(5) Forget the stereotypes about Brazil. It are only a lot of bulsh*t. Sorry, but, people learn some ridicule foolish about Brazil in the USA. Foolish like:

5.1 - "Brazil ans are hispanic";
5.2 - "Brazilians speak spanish" (but, we speak portuguese);
5.3 - "Brazil is extremely poor" (we have the 8th largest GDP of the World);
5.4 - "there's no middle class, but, a huge ga between the rich and poor" (Rich and middle class are more than 64% of the Brazilian population);
5.5 - "tourist are robbed eevery time, "boys ask money for tourists (poor boy ask money for anybody in Brazil);
"Brazilian children walk barefoot" (what they would wear on the beaches?);
5.6 - "Brazilian women are sluts looking for a green card" (many brazilians dislike relationship with foreigners and Brazilian women are iindependent They rules the relationships and many of them have a life of dream in Brazil. They don't need to leave a rich country to live in a nation in crisis to be treated as inferior for some stupid person with the same race of them);

Well that can happen anywhere, not just Brasil!, and the fanny pack doesn't help... but yeah he was just in a bad time at a bad place, and if you want to be 100% not to get ganged or hurt or etc. be careful and don't be alone where not a lot of people are around, and also Brasil is beautiful, go anyways, oh and if that doesn't work, just don't act as a tourist, act like your brasilian=]

No, not really. I was born and grew up in Brazil but never encountered a robber or anything, just rumors about my cousin getting robbed. I think if you make it obvious that you are a foreigner or you're very rich, then there'd be more chances than the people who looks not so rich.

Your friend exaggerated a little bit, but just be cautious.

Unfortunately what your Brazilian friend told you is true. I have been to Brazil every year since 1992 and in tourist destinations like Rio and Salvador not just Americans but visitors from all over the world are increasingly being targeted because they are perceived to have money or something worth taking. In Rio, Capacabana's Av Atlantica and adjacent beaches are prime areas for assaults and robberies day and night. In Salvador, Barra, Pelourinho and the cruise ship terminal are areas where tourists need to be on their guard.
What can you do to avoid being robbed? Leave the fancy gold chains, rings, watches, etc. at home. Get the cheapest looking digital watch you can find, ditch the Nikes for sandals (please, no socks!) leave your passport, credit cards and money in the hotel safe.

BRAZIL
I'm Brazilian and Brazil isn't that bad. You will not get beat up for no reason. It also depends on what parts your going to. The poor parts (ghetto areas) are the bad areas. But there are A LOT of beautiful places in Brazil. Many people go to Brazil and love it. Although it is true, when you go out try not to wear fancy/expensive clothes and try not to wear jewelry. If you can't speak Portuguese, try not to speak English out loud. People, not just in Brazil but also in other foreign countries, think Americans have much money. So its pretty obvious not to speak English out loud. But in all Brazil is a wonderful country. Most people there are friendly and kind. I love going to Brazil!!!! :]

well YEAH!

tourists are always targeted ANYWHERE you go. its an easy target. they have no idea where they are and they always carry money on them for souvenirs. Its just common sense. Americans who visit American cities always look ridiculous w/ their "i love new york" t shirts and fanny packs. Americans target American tourists for the same reason. Also those people tend to lack common sense. like they tend to only rely on maps, ask strangers stupid questions, that's another reason why they are targeted, stupidity. they are completely focused on looking at something, video taping, taking a picture, while they are oblivious they make the perfect target. they are usually in shock and unable to defend themselves while being robbed, due to a sudden, unsuspecting change in events.

why would you even wear that stuff?? acting like/looking like a tourist is a choice. a very unflattering one if i must say.

EDIT: NO NONONO i by all means did not mean YOU when i asked that question, it was kinda like a rhetorical question, like having a conversation with everyone asking people there theories on the question, hahaha! im sure your fashionable, it wasn't directed at you!!! :) sorry for the misunderstanding! haha

abbscarface
Well if you stay in where the tourists are supposed to stay, then no its not dangerous, if you go beyond the isolated area, good luck.

Watch the movie "Turistas", its based on a true story, you'll see what im talking about.
