I love Brasil.....I was in Recife (and Rio and Salvador) last year, and Sao Paulo this year... it's simple - don't look and act like a tourist and you will probably be OK!
Don't wear jewellery, watches, don't carry a lot of money, don't flash a big wallet about, and don't over-use your camera! Brazilian people are very friendly and hospitable, but some of them are poor and desperate - unfortunately more so than in other countries.... so don't put temptation in their way.... Be aware of where you are and where you are going... look like you know what you're doing... try and fit in (wear shorts, t-shirt, flip-flops like everyone else!)...
Enjoy and have fun - I did.... |

Honey if we believe in everything we read and see, we wouldn't leave our houses to go anywhere!
Brazil is not a very safe country but it is not that bad. Also the crime rates are going down since 2001! Things happen of course but if you are cautios and know where you are going, the chances of something happening to you is small.
Recife is not even considered a dangerous city. RJ and SP may be more dangerous because they are much larger.
Go and have fun! Recife is absolutely beautiful! |

Some movies show a dangerous Brazil
But it's just a movie.
The same of Hostel and Saw.
On resident evil show american zombies. But the zombies exist???
Brazil have the same dangerous of USA and France.
Recife have a calm downtown, but a dangerous interior.
Sao Paulo have many polices in Paulista Street, but many gangs on rest.
When you drive in Brasilia is calm, but it's dangerous with u walk.
Rio de Janeiro is a paradise security in South and Barra da Tijuca. The North Rio is the same of Miami and London. The West Rio is so dangerous because is a black and poor quarter.
The South Rio de Janeiro is a European city.

As dangerous as many big cities in Europe, Nth America, or like Sao Paulo or Rio, in Brazil itself. Be careful the same way way you would as walking in any of the places mentioned above. There is one difference, though: strangely, and unlike in many dangerous cities, the PEOPLE themselves are always saying that. I am a native of Rio de Janeiro and would hate if an outsider, foreigner or Brazilian, say that my native city is dangerous or make comments. But in Recife they do, maybe thanks to the local sense of humour...
In any case, if you are going, hope you enjoy it a lot, it's a great place, explendid nightlife, brilliant food, and I love it!!! Don't forget to try goat cheese in flame at any beach, it's delicious, and drink "Pau do Índio" (The Indian's Dick),a local drink whose secret formula is said to be aphrodysiac - go easy!!! Don't miss a night of Forró. Also, spend a day in Porto de Galinhas and go to Olinda. Have fun! |
