Of course. Anyone who speaks english there will tell you where not to go, just ask them. Its just like travelling in most other areas of the world.

Sorry, but if you are looking for safe places you should go to Swizerland.

I live in Belo Horizonte, 360 km from there, and I have no idea to go with my family there.

Rio is dangerous for "cariocas" too. But if you wanna have emotions, Rio is perfect!

It's depends on your age and the people that you'll be there.

yes, i'm a young girl, and i was fine by myself there during the day, at night and stuff i was with my family though. at night i did get a little nervious, but overall it is very safe, its not what people would normally assume. i haven't been there in like a year or two, but i've been about half a dozen times, it amazing, nights can get a little scetchy, just try not to go anywhere at night alone, or wear flashy jewlry and you will be fine. have fun!!

No. At the present time it really is not.

Take the usual tourist precautions. Beware of pickpockets and keep your passport and money close to you. If you use backpacks a common thing to do is to put the backpack in front of you.

As long as you stay on the main strip and with the crowd. There are ALOT of homeless (and alot of them are teens) and they tend to wander in groups. These groups tend to corner tourist who are walking apart from a crowd.

Yes. Just don't be a foolish tourist (don't go wander on your own, don't flash your money, don't go in the seedy areas). I go every year.

Stay away from the favelas (slums) unless you are on a tour. A lot of crime happens in those areas from what I've heard/read.

Don't look like a tourist when you leave your hotel room. Don't wear socks and sandals at the same time! Try not to wear clothes that look like vacation clothes (loud hawaiin print shirts, etc).

Always carry a few bucks for WHEN you get mugged. Petty theft is the most common type of crime in Rio if you're a tourist.

Watch out for the street kids that might try to distract you while someone else tries to steal your camera, etc. You'll likely see them along the boardwalk in Copa and Ipanema.

Don't walk on the beach at night. Even be careful during the day!

Travel with at least 1 - 2 other people if you can.

Look confident about where you are going. Again, avoid looking like a tourist. Try to blend in. Maybe even "tan" a bit before you go to Rio if you are pale white right now.

Have fun. Most muggings are basically thugs wanting some quick cash or a camera, etc. Just go along with the mugging. Don't try to be a hero. Give them the cash and go on your way. Try not to carry too much cash, however. Maybe $20 - 50. You can, of course, carry a decoy wallet & keep your money in a hidden money belt/purse.

Stay in groups. There is safety in numbers.Watch your stuff on the beach, young kids are experts at distraction and WILL steal your belongings if your not careful. They move to the side kinda like a crab, when you least expect it they are right next to you.
Also watch out for locals wanting to take you on a tour of the rain forest, you may not come back.We were told by the hotel staff that locals invite you to witness a type of religious sacrifice with a chicken or animal in the forest ,who knows it might be you.Be CAREFUL and use common sense.
