You can go back and forth for up to 5 years with a tourist visa...although you can only stay up to 180 days in a non-calendar year, 90 days being the norm, with the extension of another 90 days upon request.
I overstayed my visa in Brazil by 2 months and they didn't care when the time came to drive to the airport and hop on a plane. My fine is 200 bucks payable upon return.
