You could try to work at the hotels. As a recepcionist (front desk), concierge, manager, etc. I was born there. Email me if you need more info. Good luck.

If you are married to a Brazilian why are you asking Americans?? he should know better than the rest of us...... well i know employing tourists is prohibited, so get a different type of VISA for starters, and like the Americans tell the Mexicans how do you expect to do anything if you don't speak the language?? and the massages people look for in Rio are the full service type hehehe

But no matter what you'll love Rio De Janeiro

Do as some locals do. Send your resume to some potential employers. Do a bit of searching on the Internet, maybe you can use your college degrees.
Some well known English Schools: Cultura Inglesa, Instituto Cultural Brasil Estados Unidos ...

Good luck!

Better read up on recent political changes in Brazil and most of S.A There's a hint of socialism and anti americanism brewing.

You should look for a School that offers English as second language. They have a lot of these schools down there. Is like Berlitz here.

Hortela
Is not that hard. But as said before, you should try to teach English, as an American, the chances for you to get a nicer and better paid job are higher. I advice you to live far from Rio, the city, I think it's safer. Because Rio is very beautifully city. But the things change there from time to time. Sometimes is really quiet, but sometimes is not. You can see it on the news.
I wish good luck.

It is not very hard

Why don't you try to get a job teaching English. You can get paid to teach conversational English in lots of foreign countries. They can learn English and you can brush up on your Portuegese.
