Depends on what you consider safe. Safer than Rio and Sao Paulo yes. Safer than New Orleans, New York and D.C. yes.

Recife has more murders per capita than either Rio or Sao Paulo. That said, you are probably in no more danger than you would be in any large city in the world that has a large number of tourists visiting. Use common sense and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Off course!!!

I'm Brazilian, and I live in Recife, and nothing ever happened with me!!!

norsk
you are never safe. especially as a "gringa" in Brasil. Recife is one of the most dangerous cities in Brasil.

Brazil in general is not safe.. sorry to say that...
It is sad the reality.. but there is a lot of crime.. and you can't be naive over there...
Walk always in group... don't carry with you valuable things.. like watches... electronics...
When in the traffic ... windows closed... ALWAYS!
Be safe...
PS: A friend of mine was raped in RECIFe.... Since then... I don't like to visit ... and when I have to... it is just for business ...

Like any big city in Brazil, it has a lot of misery.
Ive been there a few times, never had any problems, but it´s advisable to be aware.
