I was very fortunate to have the chance to live and go to school in Rio myself. My dad was working for Petrobras at the time.

There are two American Schools in Rio as well as an International/British school.
I went to the British and I found that around 60% were of the elite Brazilians and the other 40 was a wide mix of Americans, Brits and other English speakers.
In the American schools you will find a similar ratio, with Brazilians taking the larger portion. This isn't a bad thing of course :P

The American schools are situated in the newer development area of Rio, Barra and Recreio.
I loved going to Barra because all the best shopping centres and cinemas are there. However, to get around you have to either be able to drive or get taxi's. Walking isnt really an option.
That said, living in Barra is very cheap compared to Zona Sul. But depending on where you work it can take a long time to get to where you are going during rush hour.
The British School is in Urca, pretty much just below the famous Sugerloaf mountain/ Pão de Açúcar.
Living in Zona Sul can be pricey, but hardly comparable to the prices of the US or UK lol!
I would suggest either Leblon, Lagoa(East) or Impanema. I lived in Alto Leblon which is perched on a hill/rock (Awesome views).

Most if not all of the apartments in Rio have gatekeepers and security guards that you have to go through to get into your apartment. Which is a nice touch. Though I feel the dangers in general are over exaggerated. I personally never ran into any issues and nor did my friends.

Night life and restaurants in Rio are unparalleled and you will never get bored as there is sooooo much to try and do :D

I honestly could keep writing and writing... But I shan't as I feel I have said too much already.

If however, you would like ANY more info, please contact me and I shall answer as many questions as possible :D

Check out www.gringoes.com. It is a "gringo/gringa web site for people living in or interested in Brazil. It has articles about living in Brazil, places to rent as well as a forum. It is a great site if you are moving to Brazil!

Well the upper class area of Rio is the Zona Sul, where you'll find Copacabana, Ipanema, and a variety of other touristy neighborhoods. I would say that the most family friendly are:
- Leblon, especially Alto Leblon. This is the wealthiest neighborhood and generally very safe as it does not border any favelas.
- Jardim Botanico. This is a beautiful neighborhood and also considered quite safe. It is right next to Gavea and contains the magnificent gardens.
- Urca. If you want a house, and not an apartment, you might consider looking here. Its a bit isolated, over towards Sugarloaf, but beautiful and generally very safe.

Then in the west is Barra, the new yuppie-ville of Rio which looks quite American. There are luxury apartment communities and houses. Its a new up-and-coming neighborhood for families, although crime is becoming increasingly common due to the money. Its a bit lackluster in terms of culture, and in traffic it can sometimes take an hour to reach downtown.

There are two American schools in Rio: one in Gavea, and another in Barra. Gavea is a Zona Sul neighborhood and Barra is in the far west.

If you go to Rio de Janeiro
STAY in any place in South Zone or in Barra da Tijuca.
