I Live in Maryland also,

Went to Rio in February 2008 with the family ( Wife + 2 kids & me )
We stayed for 3 weeks total cost was about $12,000.00 including airfare

Well, first thing buy ur ticket with RETURN guaranteed so you wont have to spent money to buy another one to come back to the US, I think that with 2.000 to 3.000 thousand US dollars (It will be around 4.500 to 6.500 R$ in brazilian money) you will have lots of fun for about 1 week, maybe more, depends on ur budget?! And u can go visit the NORDESTE, which has the prettiest beaches ever, in FORTALEZA, ILHEUS, PORTO DE GALINHAS, NATAL, SALVADOR and etc... btw you will also be able to buy lots of stuff like clothes, earrings and etc, you'll love it there and make sure u visit NORDESTE.
Be careful, dont go out on the streets of big cities with cameras and electronics on ur hands, it can be very dangerous, make sure ur with a large group of people, dont go out alone, dont follow strangers. (When ur in a big group its kinda safer!)
