In Brazil, only Christians-non Catholic (mainly by followers of the new "churches" evangelical), which are quite ignorant and intolerant, has hatred and prejudice against spiritualism.
Followers of Spiritualism has a great social work, favoring the poor: distributing food, clothes, medicine and shelter needs, all free. |

Spiritism was well accepted by Brazilian high society at the end of 19th century, although it was more like a fashion than religion. Rich people promoted spiritual seances at social gatherings just for fun. In those seances, spirits would come to give a message. However, only in mid-20th century, Spiritism gained respect as a serious religion, after the strong influence of a medium who became the biggest icon of the new religion. He helped disseminate the doctrine by writing more than 400 books under the influence of several different spirits. His books bring message of comfort, peace and hope through poems, novels and scientific approach, but primarily his books tell us what life after death is all about.
His name is Francisco Xavier and he used to receive in his house hundreds of people per day, seeking messages from deceased beloved ones, desperate for consolation. He used to write letters and messages to all those people using the deceased handwriting. Soon, celebrities started to seek his help, too, and his fame spread nationally and internationally. All the profit from his books were given to charity and he lived a poor and humble life until he passed away in 2002. Please, google Francisco Candido Xavier.
Brazilians, then, started to study the work of Allan Kardec the codifier of the messages from spirits, a french educator who wrote, between 1857 and 1859, 5 books that are the basis of the doctrine . He is the father of Spiritism.
Spiritism is the religion that grows daily in Brazil. Nowadays, we are in 2.2 million in Brazil and about 10 million in the world. According to studies, part of Europe didn't accept Spiritism and the concept of reencarnation, because they couldn't accept the idea that a man could be or have been born as a slave in a previous or future life.
We, spiritists, believe that one day, the spiritist phylosophy will be in every religion and in every heart. We consider Spiritism the Counselor promised by Jesus Christ.
Peace! |
