I would avoid Rio...kind of overdone. I spent 4 years in Recife. It is a city on the tip of the eastern most part of south america.
Most cities I have been to in Brazil tend to have city celebrations, and I tell you what...those brazilians know how to party. Carnival is good in Recife.
Campina Grande...west of Recife has a city celebration called Sao Joao...supposidly the biggest in the world. As far as I know, it is the only one in the world. The whole city shuts down for three days, and goes into a constant party. You can enjoy every gambit of fun, from bringing the kids to participating in group orgies (I never did that).
Brazil knows how to party! |

Rio and Sao Paulo have the best nightlife. I am more familiar with Rio. There are great clubs in Rio, the best one is called Nuth, if you prefer a lounge there's a great place called ZeroZero. If you're looking for more of a samba club check out the Lapa district there are many places.
Clubs are open all night in Rio. In fact people don't start going out until midnight.
It can be dangerous if you don't have your wits about you. You are especially at risk if you are in Copacabana and it's clear you are a tourist with money, cameras, and other goodies. If you are discreet and act like a local you should be fine.
The women are very friendly and, generally, don't have anything against americans. But if you don't speak the language your interaction with them will be limited to nods and smiles. |
