Hi True Diva:
I highly recommend you to visit both places. They are beautiful and very different. Rio de Janeiro has many things to offers: nice beaches (Ipanema, Copacabana, Leblon), great night life and great sights (Sugar Loaf, Christ Redentor, etc...).
Bahia is a historical city. You should definitely visit in Bahia: Morro de Sao Paulo, Praia do Forte (considered Brazil's French Polinesian), the city of Salvador, and the Pelourinho (Salvador da Bahia).
If you have chance, try to go further up and visit "lencois Maranhenses". It is absolutely beautiful.
August is a great time to visit, not too hot and not raining season.
Also be careful, don't act too much like a tourist. Dont' wear too much jewelry and try to leave your watch at the hotel (or better in the USA), you won't need there! Becareful with your wallet and keep your digital camera on your pant's pocket or little purse.
The rest... simply enjoy Brazil!
Here are some sites about these places I have mentioned:

http://www.praiadoforte.org.br/
http://www.lencoismaranhenses.com/lencoi...

Good luck. |

Dear True di, first of all i would like to support the ideia and just say enjoy the trip, as somebody already said, usually people that visit Brasil will find reasons to return in the future. I was reading the coments/ answer already given by " GiGi" and all i can say is that if you follow her tips you wont be disappointed. God Bless You and happy vacation for you and your family. |

Definitely go! Brazil is a beautiful country with friendly people and many things to see and do. Just some ideas that come to mind, and I understand your interests may vary:
futebol (soccer) - the nation is crazy for this sport, with good reason
beaches - whether in the cities (like Rio) or away, the beaches are gorgeous
food - many different foods from the many different cultural influences
architecture - colonial to modern, interesting to see the contrast
music - samba, MPB, choro, etc - music is a big part of the culture of Brazil
people - very friendly and outgoing and fun
Also, art, museums, plant life, animals, shopping, etc.
Brazil is well worth a visit (or two) |

Yes, come come, you will liked!
But there is a diversion in your question because Ipanema is in Rio and not in Bahia..... |

Brazil is worthwhile...most people doubt to come Brazil for the first time...most of them return...Brazil have a relative small tourism rate, but one of the highest rate of return and satisfaction.
Just, as in any other place, be carefull to choose a nice hotel at an good area and enjoy it at most!!! |
