Yes, I have been to Sao Paulo. A really nice place, with lots to do and a great night life, but the sheer quantity of people in absolute poverty is astounding.
As others have noted, Brazil has a reputation for theft and violent crime. I would guess this is largely as a result of the poverty and also the size of the sprawling cities there. You certainly need to be on your guard, especially at night time, which made me feel slightly nervous. That said and done, there is some tremendous scenery, excellent bars and restaurants and a good climate. I would certainly go back.

I live here, in Rio. I have spent my life here. It is beautiful and the people are even more beautiful. Certainly we have crime, like any city (bigger than London), but we are usually the victims, not the tourists. Just use common sense if you come. If Yahoo allows you to contact me, I would be only too proud to show you around.

I went to Brazil this summer. Rio is dangerous and edgy so you have to be careful. Parhaps take a guided sights tour.
I then went to a small place 4 hours on coach north called Paraty which was a fantastic little village with loads of character. I'd love to go back to South America and if I did I would go to the little places in Brazil and stay away from the busy, dangerous cities like Rio.

I have been to Vitoria and Vela Vehla area about a year ago. Loved it. You have to be careful, there is crime everywhere in the world. Use common sense. Research the area you are traveling to before you go. Have a translation book with you unless your fluent in Portuguese :) . It was invaluable. Vela Vehla was right on the beach and it was gorgeous ! I was their in their spring time... Their seasons are opposite of ours in the USA. Do beware there are people everywhere who want the American dollar... So use common sense and have a great time.

A bit on the dangerous side (I'm talking Rio DJ specifically) - I had a couple of attempted muggings and I was only there a few days. Some women are beautiful; most are ugly - there seems to be no middle ground. Watch out for scams.
