I lived in Brazil for a while, and a good understanding of english is barely enough to get by. Try learning Portuguese. That is the language spoken in Brazil.

Good Luck.

John
I spent several weeks in Brazil and hardly knew any Portuguese except for basic greetings and stuff like that. I would suggest learning at least some basic Portuguese before your trip and you should do alright! By the way, the Brazilian people are some of the nicest and most welcoming people I have ever met in my life. Have fun there!

Depending where you go in SP you won´t find it so difficult to communicate in English but eventually you will have to say some sentences in Portuguese.Find a way to learn some basic words and sentences so you won´t have such a hard time and if you can´t get a good pocket dictionary for Eng- Port where you are get one as soon as you arrive here. Take it easy and have a good time...

Ok First of all..SPANISH DOES YOU LITTLE GOOD in Brasil...

you will see NO Spanish at all...Brazilians are NOT Hispanic at all...NOT remotely close...

Your English will do you well at your hotel and that is pretty much the extent of it..

get a tourist book of Portuguese and learn a little bit...it is worthless to think that English will get you through this trip of yours..

You may consider learn some portuguese. Do not try to speak spanish here, some words just does not have the same meaning even the write alike.
It depends on the state you go you may find people that speaks english, but do not take that as reference.

What language do you speak? Get yourself a little phrasebook. Make sure you are part of a tour group. If you go alone & can't speak Portugues you are leaving yourself open for problems, especially if you look very much like a gringo.

In restaurants and hotels, you won´t can problems. Our front desk attendents, all speak english. But around the streeets, stores, malls and incluide police officer, we usually don´t speak english. Only Portuguese. São Paulo isn´t a tourism city, it´s a business city.
Our Police Departament speak english.
It´s a oportunity to learn some words in portuguese.

well in São Paulo and Rio where I live many people speak some English and Spanish. São Paulo is a business city many people can speak other languages. But like Andre x said you could have problems with people on street. lWhy don't you try learn a little Portuguese? Try BBC Languages

I hope you enjoy your trip!

Many people in São Paulo understand a little bit of English. But you should at least learn the basics of Portuguese or Spanish. If you speak Italian, it will be easy.

Learn as much Portuguese as possible and buy a book of Portuguese phrases for tourists. English might help, but not a lot. You might be able to decipher signs and labels if you know Spanish because Spanish and Portuguese have similarities. Yes yes, I know Brazil doesn't speak Spanish, but I've very well-versed in Spanish and it helped me learn Portuguese quickly. I felt like I already knew it. Learning Portuguese is the BEST thing to do. Use this link:

You speak a little english? that's ok because most of brazilians speak just a bit of english. Make sure to get a good english/portuguese dictionary for travellers - it has the basic to get you by...

Also the Hispanic language is not spoken in Brazil nor anywhere else because it doesn't exist. Hispanic people speak Spanish and other dialetes... All countries in South America speak spanish except for Brazil, which speaks portuguese.

Don't worry much, otherwise you will never go anywhere... it is an adventure travelling to a country where you don't even speak the language... you will be okay as long as you are a savvy person...

African Queen
u av 2 at least know, or have an idea of the indigenous language.
