Unique gifts from Brazil? |
My dad is going to Sao Paulo next week for business. I can't go along, so what sort of uniquely Brazilian items (jewelry, clothing, art, etc.) should I ask for him to bring back with him? |

Every time I go to Brazil I go to the flee markets to buy semi precious stones. Brazil is famous for them and I have coasters made of blue stones and some made from some kind of brown agata which are fabulous. Also key rings with semi precious stones and stuff like that. Your dad can also buy you bikinis and "pareos" which are the sarongs you wrap around when at the beach. If he can, tell him to buy Cachaca which is the cane rum used to prepare caipirinhas which are just delicicious albeit very alcoholic! |

Ask for Havaianas and (I can't remember the word for it in portuguese) but these Sarongs that Brazil is known for. Also ask for anything like a bag or something with the Brazil flag on it. Then you can keep it. |

As someone has mentioned you can ask your Daddy go to a mall in Sao Paulo and bring you some gemstone gift, gemstone birds which are handcrafted and beautiful, handbags, jewelry ( in Brazil, gold is 18 karat while in the USA it's 14 K), and there jewelry has a fair price. There are hand made necklaces/ earings. And there are good and nice shoes, sandals also !
And if you like sweets, he could bring a " dulce de leche" in portugues is doce de leite which is delicious.

He'll probably see street vendors who sell blouses, skirts, earrings, bracelets, wood carvings, etc. That would be easiest for him to find. If he has time, he could go to a market. If he'll be in Rio, strolling vendors have sarongs, hats, futebol jerseys....
I'd ask for a bottle of malagueta sauce -- VERY HOT! He could find that in a little food market. Some of them have elaborate, tapered bottles of spices, which are pretty enough to keep as kitchen art. |
