We want to visit Rio de Janeiro. Will we be safe?

Bom dia! .. Some friends and I want to spend a couple weeks in Rio de Janeiro. Are there ways to guarantee that we can have a great time without running into danger? .. Thanks!

No different than New York City, just blend in, don't wear jewelry, don't stand out as a tourist and carry your money close to you, try not to use a pocketbook/wallet better yet, put your money in your front pocket, and just be aware of your surroundings, just as you would in any major city....you will have the time of your life, the night life, the beaches, the music, and most of all the friendliest and liveliest people you will ever meet. Enjoy your trip and all the natural beauty Rio de Janeiro has to offer.

well, i won't say that isn´t danger but it's not if you are in the middle of a civil war, I spend some time in Rio, just got back. I didn't saw that much danger, but happens. All big cities have a trouble with violence, you just have to know what to do, and don't call any attention, sometimes its just so easy to know who is a outsider. If you choose to go, will be a travel that you will never forget. Rio de Janeiro is a beautifull city and every place you look will find a beautifull place to look... i just never got tired of looking into the window of my room, just a wonderfull place to enjoy and please don't forget the carnaval. that's it.

Bom dia!
I'm Brazilian and I not knows Rio de Janeiro, but the news dont are great in relation a violence.
The Brazil have others places more beautiful for visit. Exemple: Fernando de Noronha, Caldas Novas, Bonito, Camburiu, Florianópolis, Cerra da Mata, Belém do Pará...
Don't belive in all the news you see in the tv or net!!!! For Exemple: the movie "Tourist" its false.
Here its nice.
good lucky.

Its no more dangerous or safer than any other city. Try to blend and not look like a tourist. Leave your valuables (locked) at the hotel and go out with just enough money for the day. Dress casual like most Brazilians do. Dont hang a camera around your neck. Avoid bags and purses. Carry your money on you. Stay away from crowds and move off if you are crowded or jostled. If you go to the beach then take the minimum in cash on you. Dont stay in cheap cheap hotels.

I have a trip scheduled for the first week in March. From what I have been told, one might wanna stay strictly in the tourist areas - the areas near both beaches and hotels.

If you wonder from same, you are putting your life in jeopardy!

By the way, what kind of rate did you get? I got a roundtrip from Miami at $499 ($630 with the taxes)!

Go to Yahoo! News and type in violence in rio, and draw your own conclusions. There are more killings in Rio than in Iraq.
Of course people who live there think being shot at on the way to work, or witnessing a robbery in the street are normal everyday things, because they don't know any better than that.
On the other hand, most tourists go back home safe, like most soldiers who go to Iraq come back home safe, if you consider pure statistics, but honestly, why put yourself in that situation?
However, a new governor just took office on the first of the year, and he looks pretty serious about solving the problem of violence in Rio. He started by transferring some of the most dangerous criminals who controlled organized crime from inside prison to different States. I think things may get better in a few months.
Also, Rio will be hosting the Pan American Games in July, so security is sure to be tightened then.
Good luck!

Boa tarde .
my question is ,why not?
I'm from Rio what's the danger?
more details please .
In Feb you got the Carnival.

Not very safe. The best way is: Go nude to the beach and take a look to the wonderful young ladies
