Well, there's so many things you should try! If you enjoy nightlife you should get to know Lapa neighborhood, which gather people from all parts of the city together and cluster a lot of restaurants, nightclubs, for all budgets and tastes.
The best beach in my opinion is "Grumari" at Recreio neighborhood, an unspoiled beach. To get there you will pass by "Prainha", that is a surfers beach, and when you go up in the road alongside the uphills of a environmental reserve, in the way to Grumari, you will have a great panoramic ocean view, with a stunning wide blue horizon. It takes some 40 minutes or more to get there by car from Copacabana or Ipanema, where most of the hotels are located.
By talking in Ipanema, the Ipanema beach is a very charming beach, a little urban, but you can see the social life of Rio beautiful people, and also relax and have a lot of fun there.
A must-see is Maracanã Stadium, the biggest in the world. It would be perfect if you attend, preferably a soccer match with "Flamengo" team, which has the largest number of fans (in the same country ) in the world. You know, Brazilians are crazy for soccer....
And finally... I don't know if you are going to be in Rio during the Carnival season ( feb 20th to feb24th), but you could get acquainted to the genuine Rio Carnival Spirit, in other ways .In fact, many people in Rio are involved to Carnival and their lives really revolves around this 4-days event.
By this time of the year Samba Schools ( large guilds or neighborhoods clubs with thousands of members and amazing drummers' corps) make some practice sessions to prepare their members to gigantic parades during Carnival. These rehearsals are kind of parties at their "Samba Courts" (a kind of headquarters), where you can listen and dance loud and exotic Samba songs, see the grassroots of the Samba Schools, like performers, musicians, flag-bearers, etc. There's a website where you can find everything about Carnival: www.carnivalservice.com, it is very helpful.
Well, Soccer, Beaches, Carnival,Samba, Nightlife... That´s all about Rio!
But there's much more... Nature: Tijuca Forest, the biggest urban forest in world, etc, etc....
For sure you need to avoid carrying large sums, need to take care of your belongs, don't go off alone in dark or strange places, and so on. This is valid when you visit all big cities, isn't it? |

There are some pretty expensive restaurants there... if you want some great food, pricey and a strange touristy appeal, go eat dinner at Marius' in Copocobana in front of the beach. Or go to Porcao (there are 3 - don't go to the one near the airport!!). Go to Sugar Loaf (Pao de Acucar). On Sundays they have a Hippie Fair that's cool - I always try to go there when we visit. The Rio Sul Mall is a good place to go and get lost for first timers... Try some pao de queijo (cheese bread). You can find this almost anywhere. If you want, there is a nice city about 2 hours away called Petropolis where the king had a summer home that is now a very nice museum. There are also a few other things to do and see there - kernel-less popcorn, Crystal Palace, Rua Teresa (shopping), etc. Hope you are up on your Portuguese - some people don't speak any English, and others might refuse to....
Have a good trip! And don't wear any jewelry or watches when walking around near the beaches! |
