Ipanema is a bit safer than Copa...
whats your price range? Marriott in Copa is nice, but expensive, and Caesar Park in Ipanema is nice but pricey too....
do you want to rent an apt? or stay in a hostel? Ipanema is the place for that, and copa is right around the corner..
there is a hostel on Farme do Amoedo that is in a good area, look it up.
good luck... and feel free to contact me if you have more questions, I've been living here a year now.
also check out Rio for Partiers, it has lots of good common sense advice and recommendations too, both on line and in the book.. |

COPACABANA IS GORGEOUS!
Major attraction: the beach
Hotels, restaurants, bars, night clubs and residential buildings,
IS HEAVEN ON EARTH!
sao sebastiao is worth the drive by, but copacabana is best to stay. |

I've been to Brazil in Rio de Janeiro lots of times. It is safe of course, but you should avoid some places in Rio de Janeiro. Like in every foreign country just be carful with the strangers.
If you need advice with hotels and local description check:
www.secretplaces.com
They helped me find hotels before. They have really good prices and make the reservation. They were fast and confirmed my reservation really fast.
Have fun!! |

If its your first time i suggest you stay in copacabana or ipanema. This way you will be in the middle of both tourist and local stuff and still be able to travel around if you wish. |
