I advice you to hostel in a quarter called Santa Theresa. It's next of the principal turistic points and have a very beaultiful view. There are familys that receive turists like guest, in the B&B stile.
See the site of one of this houses: http://www.casaaurea.com.br/
See also the net of hostelling international: http://www.hostel.org.br/

Hi there.

Too many options, from R$ 9/day (collective room and shower / located at Lapa) to R$ 150/day (private air conditioned room with private bathroom, well located).

The cheapest options won´t be acceptable for people who care about hygiene or safety.

I don´t like Copacabana nor Lapa.

I have to confess I hate to go to Copacabana, and can not understand what makes a tourist go there. Polluted, over-crowded, terrible traffic, noisy and full of prostitutes.

Lapa is great for nightlife, or for purchasing antiques. Not a place I´d recommend for staying...

You will find some options clicking the links below.

I have been in one in Rio right in Panema and it was quite fine. Clean and safe.

Have fun....Rio is one of the most beautiful city I have ever seen.

hi , sorry but this guy saci is off centered. He suggest you to choose a hotel in Lapa? That´s the worst place for a girl to stay, full of prostitutes, a lot of drunk bums hanging around, and dangerous...
Copacabana is the right place for those who wants to enjoy a beach ( now one of the cleanest beach in Rio) a whole variety of hotels from one to five stars , restaurants , bars and a lot of folks from everywhere around the world and the most important: the best police patrol area in Zona sul which is the area with another famous beaches like Ipanema, leme, leblon and arpoador and you can go by walking to each of them. But let me give a piece of advise: forget about rio, cause there's a dengue epidemic which has killed more than a hundred people and 85 thousand under medical treatment in hospital and in militarymedical tents around the city because of the lack of more hospitals.
Go to Porto Seguro BAHIA and have a wonderful vacation in a steady and warm temperature, warm sea water surrounded by coral reefs. The real WONDERFUL CITY
By the way I live in rio de janeiro for 40 years and I wish you a nice and happy vacatios

Definately DO NOT say in Lapa as sugested in another answer. This would be very unsafe. In Copacabana there are some hotels that range from week and cheap to very nice. Copacabana is also quite convenient to stay at since it is close to most touristy activities. The Copacabana beach is not the nicest however. It is dirty and not very nice. Ipanema beach is OK but the best beach in Barra. There are excellent hotels now in Barra. Sheraton Barra is abour $300/night and there are other nice residence hotels which are less than $100/night. Try Casa del Mar which I use often.
