Mr Blah

What do the symbols on the brazil flag mean?

alberto
Brazilian flag shows four Colors: (1) green; (2)yellow; (3)blue; and. (4)white.

Green means our forrests, plantation in general. Yellow is a reference to gold, and richness of brazilian territory. Blue remember water, ocean and the sky. White, is for peace. But, some historians believe that the colors are references to european royal families, from which brazilian emperors came: Bragança (royal family of Portugal) is represented by green color and Habsburg family ( thanks to Maria Leopoldina Habsburg, wife of emperor Pedro I) is represented by yellow.

The blue circle is a reference to the sky in Rio de Janeiro at 8:30 PM in the night of republic proclamation, november, 15th in 1889. Each star represent a state at 1989.
The white strip is the Ecuator line, and the star above it, is the state of Pará, which was the only one in the North hemisphere at this time.

White strip includes a motto "Ordem e Progresso" (Order and Progress, of course).
