Rio is nice, very beautifull. Violence is not towards foreigners, its a social problem that causes a lot of problems to the population.
As a matter if fact, Cariocas (Rio´s locals) are very friendly to tourists.
The south zone (close to the beach) is a lot safer than the north zone (the city has a massive mountain with a huge forest dividing south and north, the Christ statue is on top of that mountain).
Avoid the obvious tourist trap of Copacabana/Ipanema and look for hotels on the less touristy parts of town such as Leblon.
There´s a lot to see and it´s not cheap, hasnt been cheap for a while with the dollar so low and the local currency (real) so stable. Rio ranks 35 among the most expensive places to live in the world now. To give you an idea, San Francisco is 36. There are still some stuff that is cheap, taxis for one.
Also the areas around are nice, specialy Paraty to the south and Buzios 2 hours north of Rio.
Check www.buziosonline.com.br
Its a nice peninsula with some 20 beaches, very clean, safe and very tourist oriented, without the obvious tourist traps of a Copacabana.
www.abracadabrapousada.com.br is a nice Inn to stay.
Enjoy

Beautiful city..I had a great time there. Hired a taxi for the day, took me to the Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf mountain(s), ate at a great restaurant along Copacabana boardwalk, drove past Brazil's largest soccer (futbol) stadium...All in all, it was one of the best times I ever had. The taxi also---including tip ended up costing what came out to about $60.00...try getting a taxi for 8 hrs for that price in North America..

Great place to visit as a tourist. But lots of crime against foreign visitors too. Affordable but yet a bit expensive for the attractions/ facilities offered.
