What does "valeo" mean in brazilian portuguese?

I know it is slang for thanks and also goodbye in Rio. But I have heard it used in more ways. Help me understand.

Hi!
I'm a brazilian. The correct spelling is VALEU, and could mean: Good bye, Thank you, Ok, and could mean that something was well done.

Pax!

ocean.denis
yes, literally means "worth it"
mostly used as "thanks"
-Could you gimme 5 bucks?
-Sure
-Valeu.

Spells VALEU.
It's a conjugation of the verb "VALER" (to worth)
1 Real is worth 1,68 dollars
1 Real VALE 1,68 dolares.
I think it's more used in Rio than the rest of the country, though it's so spread it's probably all over, but certanly started in Rio.
I use it all the time, even in E-mails before the signature, but it's very informal.

va.ler
[val'er] vt+vint+vpr 1 to value, be worth. uma libra vale cerca de um dólar e sessenta e três centavos / a pound exchanges for one dollar and sixty three cents. 2 to be valuable. 3 to cost. 4 to deserve. 5 to protect, help, assist. 6 to mean, signify. 7 to be valid, have force or power. sua sentença vale muito / his judgement carries great weight. este bilhete vale para duas pessoas / this ticket admits two. 8 to be useful, serviceable. 9 valer-se (de) to avail oneself of, to have recourse to, take refuge with. a saúde vale mais do que a riqueza health is above wealth. fazer valer os seus direitos to stake a claim. isto ou coisa que o valha this or something like it. mais vale um pássaro na mão do que dois voando a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. não vale nada! it isn't worth a farthing! não vale o que come he is not worth his salt. não vale um caracol it is not worth a fig. o cavalo não vale a sua ração the horse eats his head off. quanto vale? how much is it worth? vale a pena it is worth it, it is worthwhile. vale o preço it is worth its price. vale quanto pesa it is as good as it looks. valha-me Deus! so help me God! valha-te a breca! go to hell (and stay there)!

i'm brazilian, and as far as i know, it is an informal way of saying "thank you" and "bye" as you said. sometimes it can be used like "it worth it" in the past form and in this meaning: "the concert last week was worth it" (aquele show valeu), kinda like, "it was good", not "worth" in the meaning related to money... i hope you understood what i mean =D

Pastor
Valeu literally means valid, valuable, or worth it. Valeu is a cool way of saying "that was great" or thank you.
