It has been said already, the following would be recommendable:

- Yellow Fever (not mandatory like in some African countries, but recommendable)
- Hepatitis A and B (although for the Hepatitis B a condom also helps preventing ;) )
- Tetanus
- Typhoid

Concerning Malaria prophylaxis, I personally would NOT take them when you are only going to Belém. The risky Malaria regions in the Amazon are in the West and Northwest (for example up the Rio ***** from Manaus to Boa Vista). Most prophylaxes have strong counter-indications (they weaken your immune system and some provoke even hallucinations), and it makes no sense taking them when there is no risk.

Before travelling check the updates on :
http://mdtravelhealth.com or your local travel clinics.

I went to the Amazon about 3 years ago. It really depends on what you will be doing there.

If you are only there for a few days, then just the malaria tablets before you go (and during the visit) because there are millions of mosquitoes. If you are trekking for a week or more, then yes, you will need a yellow fever injection.

If you have never been before, prepare to be amazed!! It is one of the few places I would return to.

Going to North /North east Brazil ?

You need following vaccinations:

1. Yellow fever
2. Dengue-Carried by mosquitos, so take a good repellant
3. Malaria possibly.
4. Hep A.

Have a nice trip!

You will need at least Tetanus, Yellow fever and malaria. Your travel agent or doctor will tell you if there are others.

TrainerMan
Yellow Fever
Hepatitis A and B
Tetanus Booster is good to have
Polio Booster

You also need to take malaria medication at least a week before you leave, the whole time you are there, and 2-3 weeks after you return.

We went to the Amazon in 1999,it was great!! We stayed in a rickety hotel built on pilings at the edge of the river, it was kind of shabby but turned out great. All we did was make sure our tetanus was up to date.
