Carnival is the biggest party ever and similar to Mardi Gras. This festival originates form the Greek Dionysian festivals and Roman tradition and dance. This is located in Rio and brings in the most tourists. Samba schools parade through the town while local bands play on the street. Dancers practice year round for this event and the city has even built seats and different lights to enhance the shows and parades (Vincent 86-88). Carnival is five days and on the week before Ash Wednesday. This is a nonstop party that Roman Catholics especially can enjoy because it is the last time to eat meat before lent. King Momo is pronounced the king of celebration. He is the Greek god of trickery, a good dancer and very friendly. The mayor gives him the key to the city to officially start Carnival (Chandler 114-117). Rio has different costume balls to attend. Some are very elaborate and formal and others are for the common folk. Some of the affluent parties may charge admission, while street performers will jokingly make fun of them (Vincent 87). You may spot a celebrity at a ball or out partying. There is an incredible gay ball at Le Boy in Copacabana that may have the biggest outcome of them all. Balls that are free can be just as impressive (Chandler 117). Be on the lookout for any violence or drunkards who may start a riot, this is one of the only downsides to Carnival (Vincent 87). If you need tickets to a ball it is a good idea to buy them two weeks in advance. You need to buy tickets to get to Carnival also. You can always buy from scalpers but make sure the tickets have a seat number and a magnetic strip. The tickets will be colored differently for each day, make sure to see what date your ticket has on it. If you cannot make it to Carnival there are plenty of other parties to attend. Carnival in Salvador focuses more on song and dance in the streets. Olinda’s Carnival is an exciting eleven day costume party that originated from Africa. Reclife is the same as Carnival but earlier just like the Carnatal in Natal. Porto Serguro is a wilder version and Paraty attracts younger people with its Woodstock style and atmosphere (Chandler 117-120).
