When is Carnival time in Rio?

Show all answers

The Answerer
it is always at the end of Feb. sometimes at the beginning of March.

2006 is going to start at Feb 25th till March 1st.

note that it is actually a whole month in major cities. during that month there are many events.

one warning though- this is a very violent month- two year ago, more then 90 people died during Carnival month only in Rio. I’m not saying don’t go, just be ware of the risks.

It is amazing though.

Hope you enjoy.

Carnival is a mobile holiday. Tuesday of Carnival is always 46 days before Easter's Friday (all very catholic parties).

The Nicea Concilium (325 AD) fixed the Easter date at the first sunday after the first full moon of the Spring (...interesting, a pagan way of fixing a religious celebration :-)
It is interesting to note that:
- Easter can never have place before March 22 or after April 25 (hence, Carnival always occurs during February or March, since there's a 46-days difference between both). If the date calculated as above surpasses the limit, then Easter passes to the previous Sunday
- Carnival Day, always a Tuesday, is 46 days before Easter. Ascension Day, always a Thursday, is 39 days after Easter. Pentecost Sunday is always 49 days after Easter.
(again, interesting how so many catholic celebrations are based on a pagan date like Easter --which would prove that the catholic (and christians in general) have used already existing popular celebrations/parties to build their myths; but this would be a discussion for another section :-)

...

therefore... the correct answer is that Tuesday of Carnival in Rio (and in any other part of the world) is going to be on February 28th, 2006 (and in Rio people take the whole week to party like crazy).
