I really want to visit, and I believe I am street smart...But man, just that extremely high crime rate, and reports of things such as tour buses being caught in the crossfire of a gang shootout, ...
My friend and I are thinking of going on this 14-day Brazil tour in the Summer. Stops would be Rio, Salvador, Manaus, and and Iguazu Falls. Does that sound like a good plan?
Those paperwork rules always change so you better check the Brazilian consulate page. This one is from the New York area, even if you're not from this area this website will give you the necessary information, including the address of the office near you:

i have travelled to and made a film in Brasil - and whether you go as a tourist or for work - you will need your passport - and a visa, which you get from your closest Brasilian consulate. it can be done next day if you go in person, otherwise allow time for the mail.
Fantastic country!

your passport and local id should be enough. make a copy of your passport, and carry that on you at all time. Leave your real passport in a safe spot.
