You should try the so called 'flats' in Rio. Is is an apartment with hotel services.
I've stayed a couple of times in a chain named Parthenon, which has a couple of buildings in Rio.

From the list bellow, I suggest you the Arpoador and Botafogo, depending on the region you wanna stay.

Give Johnny a call. He is a US ex-pat, been living in Rio 9 years now. We got an apartment from him over new Years. It was in a great location (Copacaban) and cheaper then a hotel!
