Ipanema has a lot of shops, some very trendy, specially in and around "Garcia D'Avila street". Copacabana the same, but not so high-end.
Then there are malls all over:
Shopping RIO SUL, close to Copacabana, in Botafogo is pretty big: www.riosul.com.br/
Barra Shopping is the biggest in South America, but it's in Barra, west zone, far from Ipanema and Copacabana, it has a free bus service to and from South Zone hotels.

And in SĂŁo Conrado, which is half way between South and West zones there's Fashion Mall, the best, it's not big, not crowded, but very high-end, Armani, Cartier... etc.

There's also SHOPPING DA GÁVEA in the south zone, close to Leblon and Ipanema, it's old but very well kept, very trendy, it has wireless if you wanna relax at some coffee shop with your lap top etc.
8 great cinemas, theatre, nice parking, etc. Lot's of good bistros for lunch and snaks.

All sites have english versions.

Now, if you are looking for wholesale, you gotta check Petropolis, the imperial city about 1 hour from Rio (it's where the Royal family lived in the 1800s). It's uphill, nice weather and at Rua Teresa (Rua = Street) there are lots of wholesale shops.

Best prices: Petropolis (about 70 kilometers from Rio) at Rua Teresa.

best prices in Rio: Copacabana, Rua Santa Clara # 33 - Go to the last floor and walk down the stairs. The whole building is a shopping center. About 15% of the stores sell infant clothes.
