Where else is good to stay in Brazil during the carnival apart from Rio?

I'm travelling to Brazil in February but want to stay somewhere other than Rio for the Carnival. It's fully booked already and we will probably be further up the coast by then anyhow. Any suggestions?

I´m from Brazil.
If you like beach, you should go to "Fernando de Noronha" or "Angra dos Reis". If you like nature, you should go to "Bonito". If you want to know more about Brazil´s history, I recommend you "Ouro Preto".
All these cities have their own carnival also.
Have a good trip!!

I don´t know if you are looking for party and celebrations, but another place (rather than Rio) that is very festive, are some cities (which have also amazing colonial buildings) in the state of Minas Gerais, such as Diamantina and Ouro Preto. Biut those are places crowed with young people, dancing and drinking all the week, and resembles in certain occasions Sodom and Gomorrah (kinda nice).
Always a good call is the carnival in Salvador (in the state of Bahia) and Olinda (in the state of Pernambuco), people celebrate by going through the streets in "carnival blocks" and dancing to local music (but you have to pay to stay inside the blocks infra-structure, which is recommended, and you can find good prices, last year a speculative bubble occured and prices fell below production costs).
Personal opinion, I prefer calm and relaxing places, go to a quiet beach, stay betwen the sea and the mountains, something like that. Probably Fernando de Noronha is already booked out. But check places like: Lençois Maranheneses and the city of Natal.

i could go on forever but it depends what your after, if you want the buzz and the party you should go to bahia and if you want something quieter go to Ilha Grande(state of Rio).Cheers and enjoy!!!
