The other answers gave good information on Chico Mendes, but, tell me, please: Why when foreigner teachers ask the students to research in Brazil, the themes are only violence, poverty and deforestation? Brazil is much, much more than this.
I'm sure that your coleagues will make good researches abouth the theme and ALL will get a "PhD" in Chico Mendes biography until the day of the report, but, I'm sure also, 99% of them will still thinking that Brazilians speak spanish, live in rain forest and are a bunch of mestizos who cultivate bananas in a poor nation.
I'm sure that no one will discover that Brazil, as USA, is a nation of immigrants. Only from Europe, more than 25 nations immigrated to Brazil. Other 25 from the other parts of the World, including USA.
Brazil is like USA: a great multi racial nation. More than 32 million of descendants of Portuguese, 25 million of Italian descendants, 18 million of Germans, 15 million of Arab, 15 million of Spaniards, 5 million of Slavic, 3.5 million of Dutch and something between 30 and 55,000 of descendants of immigrants from the United States.
Brazil is a large nation like USA (with a smaller GDP, population and military power) but a modern and rich nation. Why no teacher has interest for this aspect of Brazil?
I invite you to visit my YouTube channel to learn more about the other side of Brazil. The side you never see in CNN or in your books. WAtch some videos and share it with your teacher, please. May be, next time she ask the class to research something more interestant about the 5 th largest nationwith the 8th largest GDP of the World. Something beyond stereotypes.
Take a look, please:
