Where is the best place to live in Rio de Janeiro with a young family?

I will be relocating to Rio de Janeiro for two years. I lived in Porto Alegre for 18 months 10 years ago and I speak Portuguese. My wife and three young children, however, do not speak the language. I am concerned about finding a nice, safe place to live while we are there.

As far as the safest most family friendly neighborhood it has to be Leblon. It's close to Ipanema but without all the shops and bustle. It's nice and quiet, nice folks, nice restaurants. Plus it's got a nice beach.

Barra is the place to be when in Rio. Specially with an American family.

Do not be concerned; there are many beautiful, secure neighborhoods in Rio.

First determine which school you want your children to attend. (Links below to American School and British School. By the way, Brazilians send their children to these private schools also, so don't be concerned about lack of cross-cultural exposure.)

Second, consider where you and/or spouse will be working and commute times to different neighborhoods. My husband suffers at least one-hour-commutes every evening.

Third, determine your spending allowance for accomodations and space requirements. Do you want a home or apartment? Homes are very costly in Rio. Apartments in upper-class areas such as Gavea and Leblon are also expensive and small.

I live in Barra da Tijuca and find it is challenging to get around without a vehicle simply because everything is so spread out. In Leblon, Gavea, or Jardim Botanico, one can walk all over without problems.

Find a reputable realtor and explain your circumstances. The realtor should help you narrow your choices.
