The largest bus station in Brazil is in Sao Paulo.
I would go to the north , places like Natal, Forteleza etc they are a little touristy but mostly for Brazilians!

I think Sao Paulo central is the biggest and you're less likely to get killed or mugged or kidnapped there than in Rio. Santos (small city of around 4 million on the coast) is probably best for what you want.
