I disagree with the above. Rio is only dangerous is your make it that way.
What I mean by that is, if you go out of your way and look for trouble then you will find it!
Its as safe as London or New york. Infact, I think its a lot safer (UK Resident, but I lived in Rio for 4 years)
Check out Southern Rio State. Places such as Ilha Grande, Angra Dos Ries and Frade.
These are all on the coast, beautiful Beach's, crystal clear water and rather shallow.
Its not over populated and is still surrounded by rain forest.
Everyone is really friendly, and even if you are an obvious tourist they will try to help you instead of rip you off :P Unless your an **** of course.
Angra (The main city, and the port of crossing over to Ilha) is about a 45min drive from Rio :)

Rio, of course (but there is a lot crime there, so watch out). You may also want to go to the Amazon Jungle. Manaus is the capital of Amazonas state. Check out a Lonely Planet Guide for more information. |

Look at Guaruja in the state of Sao Paulo, that will be better if you still need modern comforts. The most beautiful beaches in the country could be in Fortaleza. Check that out as well. Florianopolis is also great for beaches and is more modern. |

that`s hard to find a place with all that you want.if you want tropical forest and beaches at the same place you should go to states like Amazonas or ParĂ¡(which is my state,by the way)you can find towns in these states where there are river beaches and also sea beaches and of course the forest.but i recommend you to get some information in a good touristic agency.hope i`ve could help. |
