Im sorry to tell you but avoid those two....try Leblon or Barra De Tijuca. Copacaban has the highest crime rate, and robberies are quite common at night if you are not careful. Ipanema is much better but is may be too crowded and very expensive especially if you want something right on the beachfront. However, Leblon (right besides Ipanema) is much calmer and if you go a bit further, Barra is the best place to live in Rio. That is, if you have money!!!

In the 'zona sul' in Rio, neighborhoods are named for their beaches. Copabana and Ipanema are right next to each other. Both areas are nice, with Ipanema perhaps being the more 'genteel' of the two.

If you have the money, find an apartment in Ipanema. Otherwise, stay in Copacabana, anyway both are nice neighboorhoods.

Well I live in Barra da Tijuca, which is the best place to live. People who live in Zona Sul (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, ect.) claim Barra isn't the best place to live because you can barely do anything walking. Not in all cases is that true, also the transportation system in Brazil is very good. If it's to far too walk you can just get a cab or a bus in like 5 minutes. But Barra has everything, and great infra-structure. Most of the buildings are new and the crime rate is low compared to the rest of Rio.

The neighborhoods in Zona Sul, however are mostly near a "favela" (slum), making the area bound to crime. But some places in Leblon and Lagoa are O.K. There is a very small part of Copacabana with larger apartments (more $$$) so there is fewer crime. The main reason most of the neighborhoods in Zona Sul have more crime is because of the location. But if you want the best views, Ipanema and Copa are the places you'll find them. Even though my apartment in Barra has a gorgeous beach front view.

I recommend Barra da Tijuca.

I would say Ipanema. However, if you live near the beach in Copa, that would be nice too. I wouldn't stay more than 3 blocks off the beach though, if you can afford it. I woudl avoid being close to the favelas.

I have an American friend who is selling a condo in each. Ipanema is better than Copacabana. www.luxorio.com is the website. They're really nice places, and the prices are flexible. It's an American style place with an open kitchen. Most Brazilians wouldn't be interested, as when you can afford your own place, you also can afford a servant, and Latin Americans don't like to eat in front of their hired help.

Ipanema is the better place. Copacabana is run down, dirty, and not too nice. The one good thing about Copacabana is that it has the subway, but compared to Ipanema that would be the only thing better.
