I know what you were told about. We call it 'tatui' here in Brazil.

It appears only once in a while, depending on temperature and atmospheric conditions. If you find them on the beach, it means that the beach is very clean. Tatuis are very sensitive to pollution, so they can´t survive if the beach receives any kind of pollution.

The scientific name is 'emerita brasiliensis', and its name in the Brazilian native language called Tupi-Guarani it means ' small armadillo' . Actually its not an insect nor an armadillo, but a crustacean. Size: about 4 cm. Edible, but it is like a shrimp skin with nothing inside.
