Why did Brazil fail to become an advanced country?

Both Anglo America(US & Canada) and Latin America(Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Chile etc) had been European colonies and became independent in between the late 18th century and early 19th century.
Interestingly enough, Anglo American countries(US & Canada) became advanced countries but Latin American countries did not.

Brazil has a huge population and a lot of natural resources; nonetheless its economy is not going well.

Why did Brazil fail to become an advanced country like US or Canada?

Dont give up on brazil yet my friend, its not failing its a emerging market just like india you can even look it up people are starting to take more notice of brazil like they should being one of my fav. countries in the world and a place i myself would greatly love to help out as much as possible environmentally, humanitarian wise and animal activist. The country has a crime problem and class problems but thats because the government is not listening to the needs of there people as well as they should and need too. Brazil should not be knocked just yet look at the advances they are making to help there natural beautiful environment and trying to get rid of gasonline use.Only country in the world that runs on ethanol they are advancing and will show the world they are much more than beautiful people who lay out on beaches all day they work have jobs and are very intelligent and will shatter the stereotypes!

While what you say is true it is not definitive. Things nowadays change very quickly. The Egyptians had an empire for thousands of years, Greeks and Romans several hundred, the British only 200 and the Americans a pushing 150. Anglo's have not always been dominant. The Byzantines had their chance, as did many other ethnic groups. Another fact for you, the Brazilian Real has valued against the American Dollar by 60% over the last 3 1/2 years. Watch out.

Many people believe it was Catholicism...
Others say it was the Spanish/Portuguese colonization.
I think it's a combination of both.

As far as the Economy, it's been great since mid 1990 but it takes time to fix century old problems.
For example, we don't have an energy problem - At all.
Haven't you heard of BRICS (Brazil - Russia - India - China), those are the fastest growing economies around.

It's really hard to pinpoint the reason.

I don´t know. I guess Americans are lucky. Take a look at your history and at ours. But things change. India was one of the richest countries of the planet, and today its population lives in poverty. On the other hand, Brazilians are very easy-going. They want to become a powerful nation, but at the same time they are worried with other things more important, such as beaches, sunset, soccer, barbecue, women, parties, love, religion...

Brazil is richer than Canada, but in Canada, people live better I think. There´s a very rich Brazil in the south. The state of São Paulo is very rich.Only it´s capital is richer then 23 american states together!!!The state of Santa Catarina is like Italy, and the Rio grande do Sul is like japan,Germany and Italy. The northest is very poor, like India,Africa,Mexico. Why are there so many differences in Brazil???Because of the settling.
See...Who colonized São Paulo,Rio grande do sul and Santa Catarina?Italy,Germany and Japan.See Italy,Germany and Japan today!!!And who colonized Brazil???Portugueses, see their country,Many cities in Brazil are more developed than their country.Morover, the catholicism contributed for this, they had to give par of their profits to the church...Morover,the us wasn´t an exploration colony, like Brazil and Mexico.
But,Brazil,in spite of the differences,is the 8°richest country of the World, and Brazil is growing a lot!Have you ever heard about Bric???Brazil,Russia,India and China, the economies that are growing more fastly in the World.
Brazil is privileged, there aren´t earthquakes, tsunami, storms there...And another thing that needs to change there,is the corruption, that is very strong.

"nonetheless its economy is not going well..."

Who told this to you? To be the 8th place (first place, after the G7) in the world list of top economies, a GDP of 1,6 trillion dollars/year and independence in combustibiles are not enough for you?

Robertsddt:
How a nation with 190 million of inhabitants can to survive if the medium class is not strong. The "poors" who lives in the slums have TV, DVD, microwave, car, etc. The medium class passes the life expending the money in the shopping centers wher the prices are highest than in the USA. As I told in another answer, a guy of the middle class from the EUA can buy a Ferrari F430 because it is very cheap there. I see in the movies "my 75,000 dollars Ferrari..." (don't make me laugh) while the cheap price for a Ferrari in Brazil is more than 1 million dollars.

A simple marriage cerimony/party may costs more than 200,ooo dollars, here. It's a luxury for the riches ones in the USA.

It's very, very easy to have gadgets ans to pose as a "medium class person" in the USA. Live here, in Brazil, to see how the thinks are expensives, how many persons have these expensive things and you will fell shame to consider yourself as a member of the medium class.

You don' t know brazilian people and you know less the brazilian medium class. Don't talk about a theme in what you are ignorant.

one word: CORRUPTION

palumbostamboli
Brazil does not have a very high HDI at all, infact it ranks in at a pathetic 70. That means there are a whopping 69 countries in the world that offers a better/superior quality of life than Brazil.

Lala L
Precisely, the problem is that Brazil has a huge population, and it is difficult to sanitation, 180 million people, and he was colony of exploitation differently the U.S. and Canada, so it is more delayed, but he evolving and is a country of high HDI.

Once the former president of France Charles DeGaulle said that brazil is not a serious country and that was almost 60 years ago...
Now I can say that it´s because of a corrupted government as well as its polititians among others reasons

SERGIO FISHER
Because the education is bad and has much corruption.

Rio de Janeiro represent very well the Brazil

The South Zone, Barra da Tijuca, Recreio dos Bandeirantes and Jacarepagua is a rich zone with glass towers, big buildings and mansions. The biggest shopping malls of Latin America and tecnologic. It's the same of South of Brazil.

The North Zone is the same of Seattle and Miami, many buildings, shopping mall, but a middle-class people and some favelas. It's the same of Sao Paulo e Brasilia.

The West Zone is the poor quarter of Rio de Janeiro, with favelas and poor streets. It's the same of the rest of Brazil.

Resuming...
Brazil have rich cities (Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and Sao Paulo) with many millinary people.
Brazil have poor cities whose Africa with many poor people (Nordeste)

robertsddt
The majority of the population in Brazil is poor. The middle class makes up only a small minority of the Brazilian population. So the Brazilian economy can't be doing all that well.
