Considering that this is not a trivial issue, I think that this is a great opportunity for correcting some misconceptions regarding AIDS in Brazil and the rest of Latin America.
The most affected region in terms of AIDS cases is Africa with many countries having more than 25% of its population infected.
According to the CIA fact-book, Brazil is ranked behind USA, Russia and China taking the 15th place in number of AIDS infected population . Indeed, the Human Rights and Culture of Peace Prize from UNESCO was awarded 2001 to the Brazilian health ministry’s anti-HIV/AIDS program. This program included massive advertising for educating the population on AIDS, free condoms distribution in schools and universities, and a specific regulation breaking drugs patents in order to allow the first Anti-AIDS generic drugs.
In summary, it is good to see that even tough Brazil is not a rich country, and it is ruled by a bunch of corrupt politicians it could provide some interesting lessons to other countries on this specific field.
