I haven't sail the Amazon river but I went down a river and lake in the middle of the night in Nicaragua. Although I was relatively safe we caught many snags: there was a drought and we had to push the boat. The boat broke down in Lake Nicaragua and there are freshwater bullsharks there known to be aggresive. Also the river we sailed was full of caymens. We also woke up many howler monkeys that weren't very happy. All in all it was memorable but it's very dangerous and this was a relatively "calm" place compared to the amazon. Also you would be very far from any medical attention so keep this in mind and research everything carefully before you decide to embark on this trip.
