From a Brazilian cell phone - Costs him minutes and plus international charges.
From a Brazilian land line - Costs him international rates.
To an American cell phone - Costs you minutes (unless you have a plan with unlimited minutes).
To an American land line - Costs you nothing.
This isn't really what you asked, but the cheapest ways to call are Skype and phone cards. And except in the case of a Skype-to-Skype call, it's cheaper to call from the U.S. to Brazil than vice versa.

as long as he isnt calling you collect it will only cost you. if you are on a cell phone it might cost you minutes on your phone depending on your calling plan and when you talk to him.
