1. How do you deal with the July 1st Moving Day in Québec? |
Every single Budget van and U-Haul truck must be rented on that day!
2. What if you can't stand your noisy neighbour and want to break the lease? But then, where would you move to if all the rental properties in the city are leased until the next July 1st Moving Day?
3. What if someone outside of Québec wanted to move to Montréal in the spring, for example?
4. What about rooming houses and housekeeping room buildings that have shared bathroom and kitchen facilities down the hallway? Are they too on a one-year lease until July 1st? |

For many many years, May Ist was moving day here & almost all leases started on that day. You are right, people needing a mover or U haul needed to rent it six months in advance. It was not uncommon to see a group of people walking several blocks with a fridge or sofa, or driving very slowly with a sofa hanging out of the trunk.
Leases now generally start on May 1st or July 1st, but it is not uncommon to have them start at any time of the year. (Although NO ONE here enjoys moving in Winter so we do try to avoid that.)
I don't think we have many of those boarding house rooms or cold water flats for that matter. Most have been turned into condos. |

1. Move early. Just because your lease ends and begin on certain days, doesn't actually mean that's when you have to move. Work something out with the current tenant, pay them $100 to move out a week earlier.
2. You can always sublet to someone else... there ARE people who will take your place for a month, especially in the summer. Check Craigslist.
3. Reverse of number 2, take over someone's lease, and then make it your own -- you can do that, most of the time the landlord is thrilled.
4. ... not my area of expertise. |

I live in Montreal in Quebec and you can break your lease anytime but you will have a penalty fee. Yah Budget vans and u-hauls are all rented, but you can also think of renting a van, or asking a friend who has a pick-up truck or something to help you. And leases are a one year lease, not necessarily always until July 1st |

1. Yes, move earlier. Also lots of people just leave their furniture in their old apartment and use the furniture left behind.
2. If you can't stand noise, maybe Montreal isn't right for you. If you do have to move, I guess it depends on the year, most of the times I was looking for apartments in Montreal, there were millions.
3. No one wants to move to Montreal before May. By then the students are subletting their places.
4. I'd say less so. |

People have leases that start and stop every month of the year! Depends when you move. |
