You should know that many car manufacturers in an effort to prevent this will not honour an American Warranty at a Canadian dealership. There was a lawsuit filed about this and other unfair business practices last week.
However other than that I believe most cars are covered under NAFTA and not taxable.
This might explain:

NAFTA covers GST and PST. |

When you go to the U.S., you pay their sales tax like you normally would. You get your papers ready for the border crossing.
IF I can't overstate this IF the car is manufactured in either the U.S., Canada, or Mexico THERE IS NO DUTY. If it is manufactured anywhere else, eg. Infiniti (Japan), you will pay a duty.
After bringing it to Canada, you will have 30 days to change it to Canadian specs (eg. daytime running lights, speedometer).
About 18 000 cars have been bought in 2006 and imported in Canada through the U.S., Canadian dealers are giving crap to U.S. dealers about this, so most border states are hesistant to sell to Canadians, but money speaks, so they're not that hesitant. |

What type of car? Some dealers in US have been told not to sell to Canadians. It is not a law, just an internal policy. One of my friends called a Toyota dealer and they told him as part of their US corporate policy, they cannot sell a new car to Canadians. However, they were happy to sell a previously owned Toyota if he wanted one.
And as someone else mentioned, you will still pay the taxes, possibly no duty, may have to pass an emissions test, and may have to change the dash controls from US Imperial (miles) to Metric (kilometres). |

Yes you can buy it in the US. Yes it is taxable. It is sometime still less expensive to do this than to buy in Canada. Remember that many rules governing cars in Canada are different than in the US and the cars must be brought up to Canadian standards.
Generally the more expensive the vehicle the more you can save.
A friend purchased a car in the US and had the changes made for his province of residence paid the tax and saved almost 10.000 dollars. The car was over 60 grand in Canada
and under 46 grand in the US.
But if you can wait,it is my impression that because so many people are doing this now it won't be long before prices drop in Canada because the dealers are losing sales and will be complaining to the car companies. My guess 6 months to a year..........maybe sooner for some companies. |
