Yes, Vancouver is rated as the best city in Canada to live and it rates very high on the world scale and I can tell you exactly why. It's because the clear magority of people that live in the city of Vancouver are upper middle class professionals, rich capitalists, and the more well-to-do entrepreneurial class. Tradesmen, labourers, the working poor etc are extremely under-represented outside of the downtown east side. The vast magority of them live in the suburbs that stretch out into the Fraser Valley. What this means ultimately that a lot of actual Vancouver residents tend have disposable income, can afford to live close to work, and have access to the cultural and recreational assetts of the city. That's what makes Vancouver so "livable".

I wish I could quote you the last study I heard on the matter, but the gist of it was the 100 biggest municipalities in Canada were assessed on "livability" that was determined by a whole variety of things that included cultural institutions, mean income, commuting issues, cost of living, etc. Sure enough Vancouver was rated number one. Pitt Meadows was 100. Maple Ridge was 99. Surrey was 98. Burnaby, Langley, and Coquitlam were in the 70s. All six are major 'burbs of Vancouver of which Burnaby alone has a greater population than Vancouver proper while Surrey is about the same size.

Anyway, I'm sure you get my point. I don't mean to hack Vancouver. I just wish they were more honest with themselves down there. They're only ever rated so sh*t hot because they just don't let the peasants live there.

PS: and that doesn't even address the HUGE gap that exists between the rich and the drug riddled urban homeless of that city. I must admit I'm not huge "man-of-the-world", but I have never in my life seen such abject human suffering as I did on Lower East Hastings. I never in my life thought something like that could exist in Canada.

I think it all depends on the person. Everyone has different preferences for what attracts them to a certain city. Vancouver though is very nice. It's right by the ocean so there's a lot of great scenery. It's close to the mountains as well so I guess you get the best of both. Also, I would say that there's quite a bit to do...it's one of the bigger cities in Canada. There's nice shopping, nice houses, weather isn't too bad..even though it can rain quite a bit at times.

Vancouver's beautiful and I love it dearly...but the rain gets a bit annoying. It's definately a great place to live but it's not the best in the world.

It really depends on personal preferences Vancouver got some great scenery and some excellent skiing etc. There's the Canucks and the Lions, but it's really a bit of a cultural wasteland. I mean, no one goes to Vancouver for the art galleries. When they hear the word culture, they reach for their skis.

No it's Sydney, Australia.

vancouver is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there unless it summer all the time..........

every place has its pluses and minuses and some organizations set up criteria to rank different places, however, the ranking criteria would vary from person to person. weather and having fewer canadiens around- or even fewer americans is more important to me than the few nice things Vancouver has to offer.

?
Van. may be the nicest city in the world. If you are looking for economy and lifestyle there are much better places to live. Cuba,Costa Rica, Guatemala,Ecuador.
