For the U.S. to Canada and vise versa you DONT need a passport. Just take a state ID or a Birth Certificate. And the new law that will require a passport is being delayed untill June 2009 now. Read about this ppl, you all are wrong!!

Depends where you're coming from and what your citizenship is. If you're American and have American citizenship, you don't need a passport just yet.

For now, one does not need a passport, just photo ID and a CERTIFIED birth certificate. If your friend does not have a CERTIFIED birth certificate, he/she needs to obtain one ASAP, and pay the expedite fees. Passports will not be required until December 2006. Good luck!

Right now you do not need a Passport to travel between the US and Canada, the new law starts in 2007.

Like Julie said.
You do not require a passport to either enter Canada or eturn home to the USA until Dec.3st 2006

For now any Gov't or state issused photo ID is ok to use.
Drivers license etc...A birth certificate is not enough without at least 1 photo ID.
You must have at least 1 photo ID to enter.

if the friend is a us citizen, they can still go to canada with state certified birth certificate and photo id. they can apply for a passport and pay the expedite fee and express mail fees for a 14 day time frame for getting the passport from application date. if they are travelling in less than 14 days and have proof of departure, they can hire a courier to do a hand carried application or make an appointment at a passport center for same day service.

details at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

good luck
