Advice needed on a visit to canada?

Im thinking of going to Canada for around a month in the summer. I live in England and feel a bit low recently, need a pick me up. Am bored with the monotomy of my life, no GF, just get up go to work, get drunk at wkends etc... Am going to go on my own which is something I've never done. Am a bit scared, do you think I'll meet people out there? Will be staying in hostels probably. I'm hoping to fall in love with the country and be really inspired and perhaps achieve a somrthing good for my soul. Do you think I'm expecting too much? Am thinking of Vancouver, don't know why, why not? Any advice I'd appreciate. Perjaps you've been in a similar situation. Thanks

Choose Toronto. You won't be disappointed.

I would taking longer than a month and starting in the east (Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland) and working your way west through Quebec, Ontario, the prairies to BC. Pick up Lonely Planet to research hostel situation. Some must see spots include: whale watching in Newfoundland, the beaches of PEI, old Quebec City, Parliament Hill in Ottawa, CN Tower, Algonquin Park in Northern Ontario, Banff and Jasper in Alberta, Stanley Park in Vancouver, and drive up the west coast of BC to Whistler. If you come in the spring you have to go see an NHL playoff game too.

What can i say? its a great decision; I lived in Canada for 8 years before moving back to the UK, and I'll probably move back later in life!

1. Vancouver is an excellent place in Canada; in the summer there are amazing hikes and biking trails especially around whistler if you plan to go there
2. Canadians are unbelievably nice and kind people - you wont be disappointed!
3. There is definitely going to be some benefit in buying a few travel books- lonely planet is a good one... They'll outline tracks and give you some aid when planning ahead with maps and such...
4.If you haven't done something like this before i suggest you take a week up north (peak district) or something and stay in hostels up there to make sure you're not really against it or anything.
5. Ontario is another great place, northern ontario - Banff
6. There are some things you definitely need to sort out for this trip in advance as im sure you know - accommodation, food, safety.
7. Lastly, im sure you are quite fit, but it always helps to train a little before hand, less chance of injury and guaranteed, you enjoy the walking more if you aren't tired!

Good Luck, i hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip. Feel free to ask me any more questions...

Your experience in Canada will depend on where you decide to go, and how independent and social you are. Being from England, your accent will be an instant attraction by many of the young ladies in the clubs, pubs, and other social settings.

If you are lucky, staying at a hostel will allow you to meet up with others your age and be able to hang out and meet people here. I'm not sure that you should expect a permanent relationship, but there are young ladies here that would probably love to hang around with you, even if it was a short time. That is, as long as you have a friendly and polite air around you, and do not look like Shrek or Marilyn Manson.

Vancouver is a happening city, but very health-concious and has seen a high influx of asian immigrants. This is not necesarily a bad thing, but usually the asian culture is family oriented and outsiders (especially non-orientals) may be kept out of the picture.

Since you mentioned summer, you don't really have to worry about bad weather, so Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal are all viable alternatives.

The most fun-loving and entertaining people I have seen tend to be in Montreal downtown on a Friday or Saturday night. It is also the city of festivals in the summer...Jazz, Comedy, Fireworks, F1 Racing, are all things to do from June to August in Montreal. If you are comfortable with the French language, I would go there for the summer, but I am biased, being from Montreal.

On the other hand, if you are looking for both fun nightlife and daytime beautiful landscape, I'd consider Calgary. They have fun in the clubs and bars on the weekends, and you are an hour's drive from the rocky mountains for biking, hiking, wildlife, and sightseeing. It is breathtaking and humbling to be standing on top of a mountain after a 20 minute gondola ride into the Rockies. Then you can come down and go soak in the hot sulphur springs, if you don't mind the rotten egg smell ;-)

Hey dude I’m a Canadian living in the UK. You don’t need a Visa for visiting Canada. If you want a job on the other had than you would need one.
Vancouver kicks a£s I lived there for two years and loved it. Once you’ve see it, the rest will be down hill from there. I’ve traveled all the way across Canada and Vancouver was the best. Loads of great brewpubs that make their own beers as well. Perfect for getting hammered if that’s what you looking for.
I hope you have a good time.

Even though it will be in the summer, expect rain. I personally hate Vancouver, and can't wait to move. Vancouver is definately not a city for singles, it suits families better. I don't know what I hate more about Vancouver, the weather or the people. Most people here are uptight, and close minded. Not to get you down or anything, but Vancouver isn't a good choice. Go somewhere with good weather, and good people.

Vancouver is beautiful but very depressing in the Winter. It is cloudy and it rains almost every day, so wait until late Spring.

You want love? Go to Paris.
Canada is the kind of place where people are very relaxed and family oriented. Of course, you may find a nice girlfriend, but it's not the most romantic country. Great for sight-seeing, relaxing, camping. Not women though, there are women, but its not the best place. Really. Thailand maybe. Much more open to guys looking for girlfriends. Not prostitutes, but actual relationships. It is very nice though. You will meet new people though, nice ones. But don't expect romance.
