Good Heavens -no! I have lived in Toronto for 22 of my Adult years and I've never heard a single soul speak French-ever. (Other than my kids doing their French Homework and that's only because they go to the only French immersion School in the City. lol)
The only need/use for French really is to get through faster when calling a Government Agency eg. Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, and that's just because hardly anyone speaks french fluently enough to call the French Operators LOL (In fact the Head of the French Department at my kids FRENCH IMMERSION School admitted to me that she is not only not fluent in French but doesn't have a working knowledge of it and has to study ahead of time for EACH class!!! =))

darwical
No you don't. Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. While English is the predominant language spoken by Torontonians, Statistics Canada reports that other language groups are significant, including Chinese, Portuguese, Tamil, Persian, Urdu, Spanish, Punjabi and Italian. Canada's other official language, French, is spoken by 1.4% of the population.

No, although Canada is a bilingual country, it's not necessary to learn french, especially since you're living in Toronto. Toronto is very multicultural and so not learning french isn't going to affect your chances of getting a job. Unless you're getting a job with the government or a job that requires you to deal with clients that speak french, its not mandatory. However, it never hurts to learn another language. IT looks on your resume.

william h
no you do not "have " to learn french if your going to toronto.

Goldista
No.

anjali

I would!!!!

A job I applied for (english/french) - 5 ppl applied for. A job that was JUST ENGLISH - 150 ppl applied for!

You figure if it's a benefit!

Marc-André
No, in Toronto they speak english only but if you want to get a job in the federal government you have to learn french.

Depends on your job. For majority of the jobs, English will be just fine. Although if you are fluent in French, it WILL increase your chances of getting a better job and/or pay.

burrito
No

mckahlan_2004
No, you only NEED to learn French if you want to work in Quebec.
