I am an American Citizen. I recently found out that I am pregnant by my boyfriend who is a Canadian citizen. He has asked me to live with him in Canada for the duration of my pregnancy. Is it possible for me to receive healthcare in Canada? If so, how do I go about it... Do I just pay as I go, or should I find a healthplan that covers canada? also do you know of any healthplans that cover americans pregnancy in canada??? help needed ASAP!!!!
One problem that you will run into is that no private insurance will cover you for pregnancy as it is a pre-existing condition. You can "pay as you go" but it is going to be expensive. Someone here quoted $35 000 for delivery and hospital care in Canada recently.
The other is that you can only stay for six months as a casual visitor. You would need a permanent resident visa to stay longer and that takes sometimes more than a year.
If you can prove that you have been living together for a considerable time, your boyfriend might be able to sponsor you. He would be able to sponsor you if you were married, then you would be eligible for healthcare after a couple of months.

you would have to apply to immigrate but it wouldn't be finalized in time
no private health care would cover pregnancy as a pre existing condition

Get married!
OHIP will NOT cover you. IF you are covered in the States, have the baby there.

Healthcare varies from province to province - and the rules governing it also vary. Have your boyfriend phone his healthcare provider and ask if you can be included under his plan. It's highly unlikely, as you aren't married and most plans don't recognize anyone other than spouses, but he could ask. The next thing he could do is call his doctor and ask how much maternity care would be for someone who was not covered by insurance.
If you are covered in the US, you would probably be better off to stay there for the duration of your pregnancy.

hospitals and doctor offices will provide care to you, but since you aren't a citizen of Canada, you will have to pay the medical bills.

Would it be possible for your bf to move down here instead? I don't know about other states but Michigan has all kinds of well mother and child programs to help you though your pregnancy. I assume other states would, too. If you can't get heathcare in CA why not have him move down?
Also, why is everyone so testy?

You most certainly would NOT qualify for health care in Canada. You do not pay taxes in Canada so you do not get to benefit from what Canadian taxpayers pay for.
Private insurance won't cover the costs of your pregnancy because it is a pre-existing condition. That means you will just have to pay out of your own pocket. I also hope you don't think you can just come to Canada to have your baby here because immigration officials will not let you into the country to have your baby because they will think you are trying to cheat your way into Canada.
